ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing

Tuition $485

Private $940

Prerequisites: None

2 Day class (16 Hours)

You will learn to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 27 feet in length by day in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. You will also gain knowledge of basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. Auxiliary power operation is not required.
Note: The United States Coast Guard has granted approval for ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing to satisfy certain merchant mariner credential examination requirements and safe boating training requirements.

Our ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing is the beginner’s course. Tuition is $430. Tuition includes everything; instructor fee, text books, ASA membership dues, ASA Logbook, and boat time. Our ASA 101 is a two-day class from 9AM-5PM with a break for lunch. Half of each day is spent on the water sailing and the other half in the classroom. Sometimes, if it’s predicted to rain all of one day, you might do all your sailing on one day and all your classroom on the other so just come prepared for anything. Be sure to bring your text book and log book with you to class. Our instructional season is from March through November (weather permitting).
To sign up, you pay a deposit of $100 (applies toward your tuition, of course), and if you pay your deposit in person, we give you your study materials right then. If you call and pay your deposit over the phone, we mail your packet to you at no extra charge. Even if you don’t have a set date in mind, it’s always a good idea to pay your deposit and go ahead and get your study materials because our instructors require their students to read the book before coming to class. When you pay your deposit, it’s a good idea to have blacked out weekends and desired weekends in mind and we invite you to share those dates with us. This will prevent unnecessary calls back and forth asking you if you can get in this class or that class.
We do our best to schedule students on their desired dates. Most classes are scheduled on weekends. You will always know, approve, and confirm the class date you are scheduled for. Once you are officially on a roster, we require 2 weeks notice if you have to reschedule. Our instructors’ income is based on the number of students in their class, and once a roster is full, we have to turn students away, so if a student cancels without proper notice, they take money out of the instructor’s pocket.
Upon completion/passing of a physical skills test and written test, you will be certified to sail through the American Sailing Association. Upon passing the course, we also give our students a gift certificate for 2 free hours sailing one of our rental boats.
All it takes for a public roster to open up is a 3 student minimum and an available instructor. Rosters are capped at 6 students. Private rosters of course have no minimum.
